Title:Seismic Full Waveform Inversion: from Reservoirs to Plate Tectonics
Prof David E. Lumley, Earth Sciences, and Physics @ The University of Texas at Dallas david.lumley@utdallas.edu
ABSTRACT: Seismic Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is currently our best state-of-the-art wave-equation method to make high-resolution quantitative estimates of physical properties within the Earth from seismic data, using both manmade sources, and earthquakes. These physical properties include P-wave velocity, density, anisotropy, and Qp using the acoustic wave equation, and can be extended to include S-wave velocity, anisotropy, and Qs using viscoelastic wave equations. My research group at UT Dallas is part of a small network of experts around the word developing and applying FWI to a wide variety of geophysical inverse problems. I will show examples of our FWI results for reservoir characterization, time-lapse 4D seismic reservoir monitoring, and applications at plate tectonics and deep continental scales. I will also discuss our FWI research plans for the Cascadia Subduction Zone offshore British Columbia, Washington and Oregon, which have produced devastating M9 megathrust earthquakes every 200-500 years… the last M9 was in January 1700, so we are currently locked and loaded.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. David E. Lumley
Professor of Earth and Space Physics, UTD
Dr. David E. Lumley is a Professor of Earth and Space Physics, at the University of Texas at Dallas; he is the Cecil and Ida Green (Texas Instruments) Endowed Chair in Geophysics, Dept Head of Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences, and Director of the UTD Seismic Imaging and Inversion Lab. He has a PhD from Stanford University where he helped pioneer 4D Seismology, and has enjoyed a 50/50 career in industry and academic research including Chevron R&D and Advisor to the National Academy of Sciences. He was the founder of the 4D Seismic technology company 4th Wave Imaging Corp (1999) which was purchased by www.fugro.com in 2008. David has been the Principal Investigator for over $135 Million in competitive research grants, resulting in over 250 publications, and almost 5,000 citations to date. He has permanently endowed scholarships at both AGU and SEG. David really has no idea how he accomplished all of this! More details can be found at https://profiles.utdallas.edu/david.lumley.
